Hokie Softball lost one of our biggest fans yesterday
John Shanklin often sat beside me at home softball games and he was also a fixture at women's basketball as well.
As his obituary states, "In addition to his work on the farm, John was a passionate supporter of the Virginia Tech Hokies. His love for the team was evident, and he could often be found cheering them on. His spirit and enthusiasm for the Hokies were infectious, and he shared that same fervor with his loved ones, creating lasting memories that will be cherished forever."
We were watching a softball game several years ago and we wondered how fast the VT pitcher was throwing. I commented that I would love to have a radar gun but that they were expensive. John pulled out $100 and told me to go buy one. That's just the type of guy he was. I will really miss him.
Rest in peace, my friend. Now you can watch the Hokies on the road as well.

the last few years, but I always looked forward to talking to John when I walked the concourse at Cassell prior to the games. I just told my wife, and she is very upset. We love you John, and miss you already.

Because we have not been on TV very often, like in years past. Still haven't gotten an answer from Chip on why that is. What changed? The ACC just wanting to promote, FSU, Duke and Clemson? This hurts teams like the Hokies because we are not getting the exposure we need nationally for the sportswriters to write about!

If this is the John that I often sat next to when I attended my first VT softball games last year (and I believe it is), I echo everything Chip said. Even though I barely got to know John, I could just tell he was one of those "salt of the earth" kind of guys that the world needs more of. Yes, Hokie Nation lost a good one - condolences to his friends and family. And special condolences to you Chip as I know you lost a good friend and I know it will be with a heavy heart that you will cheering on the ladies today and tomorrow.
