That is a can of worms best left unopened, my friend. Alas…..

Your premise is incorrect. Plenty of other pitchers on plenty of other teams are doing the exact same thing as Emma, but are rarely being called for it (or as often). Unfortunately, and I think this is just plain unfair to VT, Emma has kind of become the poster girl for the illegal pitch. Probably it is because she is on the #2 team in the country and is a dominant pitcher. But this isn’t on Doug’s shoulders, at all. He is widely regarded as one of the best pitching coaches in the country. Also, while I’m sure they will work more extensively on this in the off-season, the throwing motion/delivery mechanics can’t be totally overhauled during the season without undesirable results. You can make some minor tweaks (and I think they have), but nothing major til the off-season. In addition to the wildly inconsistent application of the rule (it could be called on Emma almost every single pitch, but isn’t—why?), there’s also an argument that she isn’t gaining an unfair advantage. She isn’t re-planting. It’s just a very powerful push off. But, by the letter of the law, what she’s doing is illegal. Some umpires are going to overlook it and some are going to call it. That’s the frustrating part. But really, I don’t see any reason to criticize Doug for this.
