Some probably aren't aware of this story, so humor me and please allow me to share it one more time. After the horrific shooting on the UVA campus in 2022, the VT softball team send a card to Coach Hardin and the UVA softball team, signed by the entire Hokies team. The Hokies were scheduled to play at Virginia that year on the anniversary of the VT shootings (April 16th). During the pregame introductions, the UVA team lined up on the same foul line as the VT team in a show of unity. After VT won a hard-fought series (2 games to one), Coach Hardin asked Coach Pete if she could address the VT team after the game. She told the Hokies how much that card meant to her and the UVA team and shared that the Hokies were the only team that did something like that. She also shared that that card was the only non-UVA item that was on her desk. She broke down in tears and many of the VT team did as well. Several personally told me afterwards what an impact her words made on them. I had the opportunity to speak to Coach Hardin in Blacksburg last season and told her how much I respected the job that she was doing in Charlottesville and what a classy gesture it was to speak to the VT team that day. She replied, "can I share something with you? That card is still on my desk today." I know she is a Wahoo, but I really respect her. And Coach Pete has previously commented that he does as well.
