Again, go to the 6-4-3 chart. Runners on 1B and 2B with no outs scored an average of 1.760 runs across all of D1 softball in 2019. If you assume the bunt that moves the runners is an out (obviously, not always true), run production decreased to 1.492 runs for runners on 2B and 3B with 1 out. It depends, of course, on where you are in the game and how many runs you think you need to score. Can you still survive a double play ball vs the reward of a multi-base hit that could score both runners? Probably safe to say that there are more doubles hit in an average game than DPs turned, but a double won't always score a runner from first. To Stallion's point, the decision is very much based on the situation, he/she just seems to over-emphasize the value of small ball. Just as important to remember, however, is that while our girls CAN bunt, we have few where that's the primary skillset. Asking #8 to bunt might as well be considered a SAC simply because the odds of her legging it out aren't that good. She's had a great career as a hitter, but there's a reason why we run for her pretty often if she gets on base. ** Edited by Hokie4Life_89 at 4/27/2023, 9:57:42 AM
