I am all for "situational hitting" but the numbers prove that a sac bunt has tended to be a net loss of total runs. That isn't to say that there aren't times that call for it (especially when you absolutely NEED 1 and only 1 run). Notice how ITB situation (0 out, runner on 2nd) improves the chances of scoring from .455 to .672 by pushing the runner to 3rd and taking the out and yet the expectation of total runs decreases. Bunting early, when you have an unknown scoring need simply doesn't net results UNLESS your players/team have a decent chance of bunting without incurring an out. That's actually pretty rare at the D1/P5 level. Usually takes a lefty with Brownie-like speed to be on-par with the chances of hitting successfully. ** Edited by Hokie4Life_89 at 4/26/2023, 3:53:07 PM
