In my 35+ years of coaching I would tell my players, go for the basehits, the homeruns will come. Here is the formula for hitting the ball: Hit the middle of the ball = Linedrives to gaps, linedrive homeruns. Hit the bottom of the ball = Flyballs or with wind or strong player results in a homerun. Hit the top of the ball = Ground balls, which if hit hard results in tougher plays for the defense and even if they catch it, they can make an error throwing the ball to get the out.
