Rankings and HS Accolades are Virtually Meaningless
You're right to question the degree to which accolades transfer to college success. The truth is that they really don't. there was a day (10+ years ago) when they were a pretty good representation of how a player compared to their HS peers (which, at BEST, translates to where a player STARTS their college career), but even that is missing now.
To tackle them individually, RANKINGS are significantly driven by the travel softball community, whereas ACCOLADES (All-District, All-Region, All-State, and in the DMV All-Met) are supposed to be reflective of HS achievements.
Starting with the travel-ball RANKING problems, the issue is largely a numbers problem. There are now too many travel teams and travel players for the media outlets and their employees to actually SEE the people that they're ranking. To a VERY SIGNIFICANT degree, rankings are based on how convincingly a travel ball coach can brag about their players. There is emphasis that is supposedly placed on if a player is going to the big national tournaments in California, Colorado, etc., and how they and their team did against top competition, but the folks publishing the rankings are seeing a very small percentage of the players who are being ranked. Many travel coaches submit LOTS of players into the process in the hopes that rankings will improve their player retention and allow them to recruit additional players for next year's team. The media companies publish more and more ranked players (including 7th and 8th graders) in order to get a bigger chunk of the travel ball community as paid subscribers to feel good about their rankings. Most submit multiple people tied at each ranking, so being ranked 50th might actually mean that they placed you at #250 or more... and that wouldn't include any of the best players whose coaches didn't submit a ranking write-up at all. It is a silly, vicious cycle.
As for HS ACCOLADES, I'm sure it varies state by state, but here in Virginia there is both an issue of visibility and an issue of politics. The accolades are probably most accurate within the significantly smaller competition pool of one's district, where it would be typical for all HS coaches in the district to meet and vote on any submitted players. There is some accuracy there because you would expect every coach to see every player one or more times during the regular season. It wouldn't however, mean anything to try to draw any comparison between a player who was All-District in one of the NOVA regions, to someone who was a Richmond area All-District player, to a player with the same honors from Southwest VA. As you move to All-Region and All-State, coaches start voting for players that they haven't seen. Furthermore, not all coaches get a vote at those levels. If you didn't make it to the state tournament (a team problem, not an individual player problem) your coach isn't represented in the voting for All-State. Add to the confusion that there are multiple All-State teams (1 for each of the state's size-based "classes") and private schools, such as the one that Sandercock attended, or NSA, where Addy Greene attended don't get considered as part of the same VHSL accolades process (although they do have their own).
Suffice it to say, the rankings and accolades are a mess. They're fun for us to talk about as fans, but they're quite meaningless in terms of predicting how good our players really are. If you want to know how good a player is, wait until you see them in a college line-up and then be your own judge. Until then, there is very little to work with that is reliable.
