But it didn’t hit her; ump called ball dead

The mistake was ump calling a dead ball and stopping play on a fair ball Apparently since ball was called dead before an out was secured the runnners are rewarded a base IF the dead ball call was in error which replay showed it was Terrible rule interpretation but that’s how it was explained by Gray Robertson on Softball America

It's both of those things: it's a dead ball, out as opposed to a live ball
