I can see it both ways. Point - it’s a rule and we were in violation. Period. Counter points - wasn’t intentional, a simple clerical error, no advantage gained (this is the most important point). Also, maybe there are obscure equipment violations out there somewhere on UVA’s side. Do they want Pete asking the umps to start weighing bats, measuring the length of cleats, or looking for yellow nail polish? At what point do you just want to line up and settle it on the field without the ticky tack stuff? I’m not saying either approach is wrong. I think in the SEC, coaches probably have an unwritten rule amongst themselves that they won’t do this kind of thing to each other. But I don’t know that for sure. The easy solution is for the NCAA to take away the penalty of an out, especially for the first offense. It’s clerical. Citigroup recently deposited $80 trillion in a customer’s account by mistake. Were they penalized for this clerical / bookkeeping error? No. So that’s a good rule change for next time.
