To me, this is where coaching matters more than ever
Pete didn’t really know what he had until we played an elite team. LSU certainly appears to be elite. Bama may be elite also but likely a step below LSU. Now, how do we respond against Bama?
Pete is still a great coach even if we lose both of those games, but his ability to keep the team’s confidence up while at the same time drilling in some improvements that are needed will be key. The season is not a disappointment because we lost twice to LSU. There are still many, many chances to pick up quality wins. Bama, Kentucky, Stanford, Cal, UVA, FSU to name a few.
The reason you play LSU and Bama early is to see where your team is at. Good formula is to lose to high RPI non-conference teams early, make improvements, grow as a team, beat good RPI conference opponents late, get some momentum heading into the post season, then beat whoever you face in the post season. Easier said than done, of course, but we are still on step 1 of this cycle. Enjoy the ride. There will be plenty of highs and hopefully not too many lows.
