Understand that at the end of the season teams were prepping for . . .

. . Bree and Mazz. Layton hadn't pitched important innings since Salem. She threw well but did have the 'novelty' advantage. There's little question that Bree had a flare-up of some chronic inflammatory syndrome impacting her throwing arm. Mazz is Mazz; throw it hard and hope the opponents swing at pitches out of the zone (see UVA game).
