SEC & B1G seem to be on a path toward divorce (Commissioners Miami today)🔗
Commissioners want 16 teams in the 26-27 playoff, and 24 in ~28, but the SEC doesn’t want the 24 in the playoff then, if ever. It bares repeating, it sure does look like the SEC and ESPN want to be the P1 entities, or they are not done expanding. Because 24 in the playoff would probably kill either one of these options. It also looks to me like the 24 in the playoff is the B1G’s move to keep that from happening. As the son of Ricky Bobby said on Talladega Nights, divorce, awesome, two Christmases!! 🤣🤣 ** Edited by Stech at 1/18/2026, 7:57:43 PM ** Edited by Stech at 1/18/2026, 10:54:54 PM

At the least, it’s going to be interesting to watch, but this can change
overnight. It’s the opposite of where they were at this time last year. ** Edited by Stech at 1/19/2026, 9:13:55 AM

Well, they both don't trust one another so this is a byproduct
Like two silver back gorillas flinging poo at each other. The Big Ten will likely want to expand the conference if the playoff goes 24. They have to be preparing for their next contract. ** Edited by goldendomer at 1/19/2026, 12:02:26 AM

Ask, why are they doing this? SEC & BIG fighting when year ago lovie dovie.
Well let’s start with why they were lovie dovie a year ago, they worked together to get control of the playoff and get most of the money. They said if you don’t give it to us we are going to leave and have our own playoff. It worked, it’s up to them to decide the playoff rules and they get 60% of the money. Yep even threw ND a bone in the MOU to get some good will with ND, be careful though, they are going to want something later, maybe to join? 🤷‍♂️ However, what is causing the so called divorce? I think the B1G has realized that the SEC is not done consolidating power. Not only do they want some of the ACC and maybe B12 schools, they also want some B1G schools and probably ND too. I could see multiple regions in this P1, with maybe even the NFL running it like MLB runs their farm teams. I don’t know for sure, but they are up to something, and the B1G and other commissioners know they want the power and money to themselves. You’re right, it’s two Silverback Gorillas fighting since those two own the power, but I am not sure where this will end up. ** Edited by Stech at 1/19/2026, 7:26:01 AM

Competition, greed, envy......
The usual suspects. My prediction is that the two will disagree more than cooperate in the future. They will fight each other for total dominance. "There can be only One."--Outlander

The big question I have is:
Who is going to broadcast the first round games under a 24-team model? If the first-round play-in games happen in the current championship game week, would Fox be able to broadcast the Big Ten’s play-in games? Fox would love that, and ESPN wouldn’t.

I think that’s the crux of it, this is a network war they both want the $$$
The profits are in consolidating the market, pay the schools with ratings a higher number, and have another division for schools with lesser ratings, and pay them less or let another network have them. You do it by taking the football first schools from the ACC and B12 and break off football, but if they go to a P1 like Saban/ESPN is talking about, then I think ESPN wants it all. I think some B1G schools won’t make it if that happens, and maybe even some SEC schools. However, what is throwing them off is how schools like Indiana, Vandy and UVA are now a player because they are using the portal to build teams fast. Just think if I said 3 years ago that the SEC would miss the National Championship game for the next 3 years. What if I said undefeated Indiana will be playing for the National Championship as a favorite, what if I said Vandy will beat Bama, what if I said UVA will miss the playoff in overtime of the ACC championship, what if I said Miami won’t make the ACC championship game but the conference is so deep they are playing for a National Championship? These things are mind boggling in just a couple of years. They are mind boggling for me to type. A year ago the SEC and B1G commissioners were seen together at games, known to be meeting on their own, and now they’re being talked about being divorced. A year ago people missed the MOU with ND, now many Commissioners, especially the B1G are very much against it. It’s crazy how fast attitudes are changing over things. However,it’s the old line from All the Presidents Men, follow the money (and power to get the money) and it comes from the networks and more specifically the Wall Street analysts that are telling them what to do to make their stock rise. Anybody got a 🔮 for what’s next? 🤣

If the Big 18 adds 6 by 2028…
Does that mean they have to poach non-ACC schools because of the GoRs? And would new schools still need to abide by their weird AAU standard? Arizona, ASU, Utah, Colorado and Kansas fit the bill. That’s only 5 though. I wonder who would be #6? ISU used to be AAU I believe. Or does that mean the Big 18 thinks they can get enough schools to leave the ACC to blow up the GoRs? If so, the could add UVa, UNC, GT and Miami to add too UMCP and Rutgers for a six school eastern division, and the add 2 schools like Arizona and ASU to the west to make that a six school western division. The other 2 divisions could be the 12 team Big 10 from before the additions of the Rutgers and UMCP. Then if the SEC wants to stay at 16 would that mean they would have 4 four team divisions competing with the Big 24’s 4 six team divsions? ** Edited by Calamitous at 1/18/2026, 9:43:28 PM

I am saying 24 in the playoff, not the conference. I will look at the post
again to make sure that is clear.

Nope…
You were clear. I just need a class in reading comprehension 101. My bad.
