Athletic article - return of the bagman
Nobody has confidence that the Deloitte clearinghouse will control NIL. Estimates are that 70 % of last year's deals would be rejected by the clearinghouse. Boosters will still want pay players bug bucks to come to their schools, Deloitte be damned. So the bagman returns. ** Edited by PadrosWindup at 6/11/2025, 7:17:01 AM

If only there were some sort of governing body that could enforce the rules
You know, the same way that every other sports league in existence operates.

Only 70%, I would have expected it to be higher.

I could see crypto playing a role in this
Much harder to track than wire transactions.

I had not thought about that. Great point

Absolutely. No matter the regulation, boosters will find a way around it.

It's going to be a little different now than the Wild West.
I know that may sound naive, but players now will have hundreds of thousands coming to them legally. They would have to consider the possibility that under the table bags of cash might end up ruling them ineligible and therefore lose access to the legal hundreds of thousands they would otherwise be making. Because I guarantee you player eligibility and availability will be a very hard requirement in a contract for receipt of salary.

Its not like they ever went anywhere...
...they have been the driving force in these massive P4P payouts to certain schools. It's no skin off their teeth to move back to paying players under the table...it's what they do, and what they've always done in the past.

They need to take on the money distribution, the rules, and relegation and
promotion of the English Football League. It will solve all of this. The powers that be are too risk adverse to do it. But that's the best solution. They will continue to flounder unless they get real.
