Now that SMU is leaving the AAC to join the ACC, it has 13 football members

and the conference must replace SMU to get back to 14 football members for scheduling purposes. Remember Wichita State is a non-football member and Navy is a football-only member. Mathematically it is impossible for a division of 6 and a division of 7 to play a round robin division schedule and everyone play the same number of conference games in football. The MAC learned that lesson when it decided to add UMass as a 13th football-only member. If Army joins the AAC, then it would be given the same relationship as Navy (aka football-only membership). I guess there's always the possibility that Army and Navy could eventually join as full members, particularly if the AAC added Air Force as a full member, but for right now both schools are happy being a non-football members in the Patriot League. Besides, Army may be the best option given all the conference realignment. UConn isn't option given its departure from the Conference to rejoin the Big East. That leaves UMass, a C-USA school, a MAC school, a Sun Belt school, or DI-FCS as the only other options. I'm not sure there are too many schools out there who would be open to leaving C-USA, the MAC, or Sun Belt to become a football-only member in the AAC because it would mean trying to find a new home for their non-football sports. Plus, it doesn't sound like the AAC is looking to add another football school as a full member at this time for whatever reason. If the AAC is looking to get back to 14 full members, then it could suggest adding another non-football school.
