There are REAL problems with expanding.
I'd prefer contracting by two. But, obviously you can't just kick people out of the conference. But I also think by attempting to add two teams, this might void the GOR and open the door for schools to leave. The only solace I have right now is by default. And that's that I think most schools who think they would easily have an invitation to a P2, might not actually have one. The fact that UW and UO are twisting in the wind tells me a lot. Also, that the SEC isn't jumping on ASU. So schools like Clemson, Miami, FSU, VT and UVa who might think they had an easy spot in the new power structure, might not necessarily. UNC is the only lock right now to me, and I think they are the least interested in leaving.
Also, while an interesting interview, I think John Skipper is out of the loop and he is a decade behind in his thinking. While I still think the "adding states" angle is still valid, it is not what it used to be. And it certainly doesn't supersede brand. And if I heard him correctly, he still thinks there's gonna be some 4 x 16 model happen. That was never happening. Even a decade ago, and it's even less likely now.
There's also a PR and culture of the sport angle here that he isn't really given the time to explore. He basically said Rutgers and Maryland were a mistake. Rutgers was a PR/culture mistake for the B1G, and going to the B1G was a PR/culture mistake for Maryland. But did all parties make money, and was the money worth it?
Ok. Let's say the ACC added two schools from highly populated states that we aren't currently in. Let's say we go full academics and add Rice and Stanford. And maybe all partied make some money off of it. This would fit John Skipper's "adding states" model. But it would be a PR disaster for the ACC. The SEC is adding Texas, the B1G adds USC, and the ACC adds Rice? C'mon man.
There is no adding that will help the ACC at this point. But if WVU wants to come, I'd have them, even if it doesn't make the conference rich. But again, this is a move that should have been done years ago, and doing it now creates contractual problems for both parties and is a small potatoes move in a big money world. It also looks desperate and past due.
