I wanted to post about John Ourand’s interview with Joel Klatt on August 24, but didn't have time. Ourand asked Klatt what’s next for realignment. I assume Ourand expected an answer like “the Big Ten is going to get bigger,” but Klatt took a completely different direction. He pointed out that college football still has a lot of fat to trim. There’s significant room for improvement in OOC games and postseason games. He also noted that this is why private equity firms have tried to enter college sports—to restructure the system and generate larger profits. But Klatt doesn’t support the PE idea. Instead, he believes schools and conferences can collaborate to create an appealing package of OOC games that could generate $1 billion in TV revenue themselves. Klatt proposes that schools and conferences create an “entity” to govern OOC games, which would negotiate with media companies. This entity would be similar to the CFP entity (not the playoff itself but the governing body. Is it called CFP Administration LLC?) My take is this: Klatt is a Fox guy, and this isn’t the first time he’s floated this OOC league idea. Fox probably doesn’t want a Super League ushered by PE firms (obvious, given their heavy investment in the Big Ten), but they acknowledge that more money could be made if OOC games are centrally organized and optimized. So, Klatt promotes this OOC league concept, which kinda makes sense. There are 68 P4 schools, including Notre Dame. If each plays 9 conference games and 3 OOC games, there would be over 100 total OOC games for those 68 teams. Separating conference and OOC games and getting separate media deals could greatly increase payouts for each participating school, especially if the OOC matchups are enhanced by (1) pitting high-profile schools against each other and (2) excluding G6 or FBS schools. If you think about it, the SEC/B10 scheduling arrangement (which was discussed before) would have been a step toward this direction. If this happens, the revenue split would likely favor the P2, similar to the CFP. But unlike the CFP, I doubt G6 schools would be invited. (I’m not even sure all ACC or Big 12 schools would be included.)
