I am not sure the circumstances are that different though. If the Iowa and

Iowa State athletes were truly "banned" like what happened to Sorsby, then should a hardship waiver (or re-instatement) be given to any of them in the first place? If Iowa (and the Big Ten) knew he was going to be "suspended" for just 1 year, which happened to be his senior year, and there was a real good possibility that he would be granted a "hardship waiver," then of course Iowa (and the Big Ten) aren't going to say anything. I do find it ironic that the NCAA granted the hardship waiver given the reason he missed 1 year. If the NCAA is truly going to "ban" someone only to "re-instate" them 1 year later, then I am not sure any real lesson is learned here. It doesn't discourage other athletes from committing the same crime as the banned athlete because they know the NCAA will likely grant their request for a "hardship waiver." Instead of risking negative PR for denying their request and granting someone's else request when both are guilty of committing the same crime.
