Division in the Country

Not trying to say that slavery was not a very divisive issue throughout the US in the 1860's and earlier in this country. States were even admitted into the Union equally as Slave & Free States. That kept an equal balance politically in the US Congress in effect protecting the institution of slavery. Lincoln was not an abolitionist but it was believed by many in the south that Lincoln would break that congressional balance within the US Congress by not allowing new states forming within the western territories to be distinguished as Slave States. They therefore felt the election of Lincoln was a big threat to slavery. Slavery was a cause of the civil war along with the other things I mentioned. Surely some other things I do not know. Just a lot of extreme political discord along north & south lines before the civil war.
