My point is the benefit of the doubt due to history is meaningless

in a discussion of this year's race for the playoff - which is the topic of the OP Those that think it is, or should be, are not only pompous, but using totally illogical thinking - glad you embrace it. How well a team did before many parts of the country had TV has zero bearing on today's playoff discussion.
