Nothing we could have done that would have made us equal with the P2, but

I think there were better deals to be had. Espn was focused on the SEC network, and was slow to care about the ACC Network. That could have been handled better by the ACC. The ACC network doesn't bring in the kind of money that the SEC network does, but it is profitable. That profitability could have been used to light more of a fire under espn. The ACC had something of value for ESPN and didn't leverage it appropriately. So it drug out. Our deal with ESPN could have been more ACC friendly. The length of the deal isn't the problem, some means of renegotiating the value of that deal earlier than 2036 could have been negotiated into the deal. Throw in some milestones if achieved Gives the ACC a chance to negotiate for a better deal. Milestones like playoff appearances, national championships won, things like that. The contract was negotiated when the ACC was down. Afterwards the ACC had some good teams, won a couple of national championships. The ACC would have benefited by negotiating the deal with ESPN when Clemson was at the top of their game. The ACC negotiated the contract while their top teams were down, and negotiated with the attitude that those top teams were going to stay down. You can't negotiate a contract for that long of a period of time with that attitude. You have to Make sure ESPN acknowledges That we have quality teams, and they're going to get back to the top, so give us a better deal, or give us the opportunity in a few years to reevaluate and see how our top teams are performing. The ACC was desperate for a network, and we were convinced that we were negotiating from a position of weakness. You have to convince ESPN to be desperate for an ACC Network because they will also make a bunch of money off of it. Which they have. And you can't negotiate with a poor self-image. Desperation and a poor self-image will kill you in negotiations. Espn could taste the blood in the water. ESPN took advantage of the ACC. And the ACC Let them. We were never going to get a P2 level deal, but we could have done better than we did. ** Edited by wwhokie1 at 7/23/2024, 9:42:20 PM ** Edited by wwhokie1 at 7/23/2024, 9:42:41 PM ** Edited by wwhokie1 at 7/23/2024, 9:43:43 PM

Jim Phillips presentation today was perhaps the best I've seen from him
HOO86 07/22/24 06:39 PM ET
The problem is he didn't get aggressive until that aggression was aimed at

I agree with every bit of that. I'm not a Phillips hater. He took over

Agree on all counts.**
Maroon Baboon 07/23/24 05:22 PM ET
Was the ACC late and slow or was it ESPN?
VTCALS72 07/23/24 04:44 PM ET
It was ESPN, but it was also those in the ACC responsible for negotiating
wwhokie1 07/23/24 05:04 PM ET
there's no way to know how involved other networks were, but it seemed

Don't forget about Chad Swofford's raycom deal**
ren_hoek 07/23/24 09:13 PM ET
If that is true, all the difference maker negotiators are in the P2
VTCALS72 07/23/24 06:24 PM ET
That's why we're currently on the outside looking in**
wwhokie1 07/23/24 09:12 PM ET
So you think there really was anything the ACC, or Big 12 or PAC before

Question, aren't your "milestones" the same as the ESPN "Look in"

I'm not sure anybody understands fully the ESPN look in. But it doesn't

It's not what I feel about the ACC, it is what ESPN felt

I feel like this "deal" was an imaginary pipe dream by delusional leader-

How about if they are the front, to get more money from ESPN for the ACC?

I'm not willing to give the ACC enough credit for being that shrewd.
wwhokie1 07/23/24 10:41 AM ET
What has happened is way above the heads of the Big 12, PAC or ACC
VTCALS72 07/23/24 01:44 PM ET
That might be right, but at this point, all the theories are just guesses.

In my opinion Swofford more than deserves all the venom coming his way
VPI_1998 07/24/24 07:14 AM ET
Reminds me of the NHL. Poor Gary Bettman gets boo’d everywhere.
OrlandoHokie 07/22/24 11:34 PM ET
I know, but think Jim Phillips is referring to the lawsuits.
HOO86 07/22/24 11:19 PM ET
Everybody liked the long-term GOR deal when it was signed.
wwhokie1 07/22/24 11:18 PM ET
Swofford catches grief primarily because of several things:

Uhh...how about the conference of misfit toys dictating to the ACC?

You are a better conference. You have elite academic institutions,

The ACC had their chance to take anybody they wanted from the Big 12.
wwhokie1 07/23/24 10:37 AM ET
3rd or 4th doesn't matter much as payout will pretty much equal out
VTCALS72 07/23/24 02:47 PM ET
That is only half of how dumb that was.
