There are several reasons, first being that ESPN has the SEC locked up to themselves. If Fox wants the next big conference, they need to pay (as is CBS and NBC). Otherwise someone else will. I’m not sure people outside of the Midwest understand how much we love our sports teams. Sports are a huge deal here and some of the best sports towns are in Michigan, Illinois and Ohio. The sports culture of or large, public universities is strong. I know UM, MSU and OSU grads that want nothing to do with sports get tickets to home games, throw parties and follow their teams to the max (my daughter being one of them. Big10 alumni are everywhere. They are in all corners of the country and even world wide. I know international students that still follow UM football in Asia and Europe. At one point, Heathrow Airport was selling Michigan hats in their gift shop! The data and viewership ratings also suggest that the Big10 is highly viewed on a year by year basis. While it may be top heavy with UM, PSU and OSU, they still bring in the ratings.
