I don't bet on sports, rarely play the lottery, don't participate in a
fantasy league, and only been to 1 casino (in Cherokee, NC) once. The most "gambling" I do is in the stock market and even then I stick to mutual funds. I consider myself a sports junkie. If it is a sport, then I will either watch it, play it or both. Where I first noticed gambling with sports is with soccer. It seems like a good number of soccer clubs (especially in Europe) have a primary sponsorship deal with a gambling site/casino/company. It doesn't even matter the tier because you will see a third tier club, which may be equivalent to DIII in college, have a primary sponsorship deal with 32Red. That level of interest in gambling appears to have made its way across the pond.
So far I would say the NCAA has done a reasonable effort to minimize the impact gambling has on college athletics. Will that same level of effort still exist if the March Madness money goes away? Or will enough schools, regardless of division level, go into survival mode and be open to seeking an alternative source. That "alternative source" is what is leading my gut towards gambling because I do think the media money could be the tip of the iceberg. I guess that is why ESPN starting its own gambling site raises a few alarm bells for me because it seems like it may be only a matter of time before the schools (and maybe even the players) will want to tap into that resource. It may start out at the P2 level, but I don't see how it doesn't spread to the other levels particularly if it gives the politicians an out card to not get involved in this mess.
Politicians may feel political pressure to stick their nose in the situation if schools with political clout end up getting left out of the P2 party. It is probably a no win situation for the politicians because it is unlikely the politicians will have enough influence to force the P2 to add the left out schools. Hence why I see gambling money as a potential life raft for the politicians because a whole bunch of money could go to the schools left out so they could do just fine and no longer pine to be associated with the P2s. Likewise, gaining access to the gambling money probably comes with a whole host of problems. The NIL and booster problems that schools currently deal with now may be nothing to the problems they will face with the gambling money. I do hope the schools think long and hard before they open Pandora's box to gain access to the gambling money. Once it is open, and it may already too late, then there is definitely no turning back because the damage has already been done.
