I agree that the leftovers could have their own party and be just as happy.
Heck you could even say that DII and DIII are each having their own party and seem to be doing just fine. One could make a case that the reason DII and DIII can have their own party is they are currently receiving a cut of March Madness money to help fund that "party." What may be TBD is whether that party could still continue once "Daddy takes their T-bird away" to borrow a Beach Boys song. I do think people could be interested in these other parties particularly if there is gambling associated with these parties. If these parties want to maximize their coverage, then unfortunately gambling may be the key to brokering deals with the network.
Prior to VA allowing people to bet on sports, I never heard or seen any gambling related ads other than maybe the lottery. Now they seem to be coming out of the woodwork. Even radio stations (primarily sports radio stations) are even partnering with gambling entities to become the "official partner of" a particular show or station. Heck ESPN recently started its own betting site which should raise some eyebrows given the NFL's potential stake ownership in ESPN and the role ESPN plays in college athletics. It wouldn't surprise me if at some point a school's athletic department ends up brokering a sponsorship deal with a gambling company so the company could be promoted as the "official partner of" that school. Now that Pandora's box has been opened, I don't see how gambling doesn't continue growing within all aspects of sports particularly if the league/association gets its cut of that money pie. Just imagine how great these parties would be if they receive double of what they currently receive in March Madness money from gambling related money.
