All of those are good questions, and there are consequences to

separating the contracts, but the separation is needed. The Big East and other conferences that are not FBS, basically finance their entire athletic programs with basketball revenue, and some of the lower basketball conferences finance their entire athletic programs with very little media revenue. The units from the tournament id critical to many of those conferences and athletic programs. Separating football could make the revenue sharing for all athletic departments easier to administer, as the football only media deals could go to football only. The rest of the athletic department can, and could, be financed through basketball and 3rd tier revenue. Many talk about a P2 break away, but IMHO, it will be a football breakaway that will happen.
