It came down to TCU or SMU. TCU had the football

program as a G5, SMU did not. Either school brought a challenge to recruiting for the Long Horns, but Texas ultimately had the final vote. After Texas left, it came down to Houston and SMU. Texas is a big state, so I wonder how much the Houston market came into play, not just the people, but East Texas is very good recruiting ground. I don't know how much influence ESPN had in that choice, but there was a reason Texas blew up the old SWC. Regionality has gone out the window, so maybe 4 schools in the state is enough? SMU will be very competitive in the ACC, and it would not surprise me to see them competing for an ACC championship in a few years. How their media numbers play out is a different story.

SMU has never been an issue. Even when on equal footing.

B12 also had three teams in Texas (+ one in DFW) and were adding a fourth.
