The way i understand it, their bylaws would

have to have been changed to allow a football only member. As you mentioned, it's why UMass left the first time, then came back as full members. I wonder if within the ESPN negotiations, they were told what needs to happen to get a better media deal. It had to be a unanimous vote to get SAC into the conference as a football only member. The $18M buy in helps, but it's a one time infusion of cash, so there has to be another financial reason they did this.
