It is here to stay. Universities have really painted themselves

into a corner there. And while there are certainly some academics who would like big time athletics to disappear, I think that's relatively few. I don't want it to disappear, I just don't buy it's criticality to the reputation of a university...that somehow athletic success translates in any significant way to academic success. It's the front porch for some people. Many don't give a rip (or are actually annoyed by it). A sports message board is really representative of the greater population that cares about universities. The front porch also has little to do with the quality of the house. I used to live in a million dollar lake house. The front porch was pretty unimpressive. Even if you think athletics is paramount, there's a point where it's too expensive isn't there?

Just a thought, what if VT football wasn't caught up in the "arms race"

I'm clearly in the minority, but yes - I'd start attending again.**

Minority being the problem
HokiesACC2004 11/05/25 08:02 AM ET
Hard pass. And you'd also put this site out of business in short order.**

Absolutely NOT!

worthwhile things are competitive and hard...things that no one cares about
MrBayAreaHokie 11/04/25 12:55 PM ET
Not everything that's competitive and hard is worthwhile though

I certainly do not think athletics is paramount to

That's certainly fair that it's different in rural, flyover America.

Well, would you prefer that VT football be more like Ferrum, playing in D2?
