will only play 1 away/neutral site game in the year with 4 away conference games and 0 away/neutral game in the year with 5 away conference games. For example, Iowa played 5 away conference games in 2022. Its OOC schedule (all home games) was the following: South Dakota St, Iowa St, and Nevada. If I looked through Iowa's past schedules, then I suspect I would not find a season where Iowa played 2 OOC games against P5 opponents. That could be a problem given the ACC's scheduling requirement with Notre Dame and 4 members have annual OOC games against SEC opponents. If you look at VT's future OOC schedule through 2035, then VT scheduled to play 2 P5s opponents every season except 2026 and 2031 (as of right now). I doubt you would find too many ADs who would be willing to trade the extra P5 opponent for an extra conference game. At least I don't think too many ADs would trade away a money game for an extra conference game and keep the 2 P5 opponents now that the CFP is expanding to 12 teams. USC might be the only team who opted to schedule 3 P5 opponents in the same season (see examples below). 2008: at UVA, Ohio St, Notre Dame 2010: UVA, at Minn, Notre Dame 2011: Minn, Syracuse, at Notre Dame If fans want to see their teams play more quality OOC games, then someone will need to figure out a way to increase the incentive enough so ADs are more willing to take on the additional risk.
