One key point to all of this that must be noted
The B1G wanted USC and UCLA to win the LA market for Fox's company-owned station in that market. It is very important to note that Fox owns their station, channel 5, in Washington and Comcast/NBCU owns their station, channel 4. The local market now matters most when you have a big market like DC and network-owned stations in that market.
I have always believed that Penn State delivers more eyeballs in DC than Maryland. In fact, nobody south of the Potomac currently cares about the B1G at all unless they are looking in on a national game. Maryland and PSU deliver nothing at all in the Virginia suburbs. This is where Tech and UVa strategically come in. They solidify the DMV market for both local network stations (Fox and NBC) in a top-10 national market.
Say what you want about Charlotte and Raleigh but aside from DMV, the big markets with key local demos exist
only in Atlanta, and Miami/Tampa/Orlando. Georgia Tech adds nothing from the Atlanta market. I lived there for 19 years and nobody outside of their small alumni base and their students on North Avenue give a rip about GT athletics. So, Atlanta is SEC. Period, even with a Fox-owned station in ATL. The FL markets are interesting as Miami/Ft Lauderdale is still a top market and layered in with Orlando and Tampa Bay, making up one of the fastest growing concentration of households in the US. This is why I have always been convinced that the B1G wants FSU.
The DC market is the big prize for the P2 at the end of the day. Someone will have to decide to add Tech and Uva as politics in Richmond will require them to be a package deal or as one to the B1G the other to the SEC. I still see uva going to the B1G and Tech going to the SEC eventually. We will see if this all plays out.
