WRT the idea of UConn taking BC's place something to keep in mind is the
capacity of the football stadium for each school at the time.
UConn (Memorial Stadium) = 16,200
UConn (Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field) = 40,000 (opened August 20, 2003)
BC (Alumni Stadium) = 44,500
Which football stadium do you think most ACC schools would rather play in? Even though Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field is able to be expanded to 50,000 or 60,000, I do not think the State of CT had any interest at the time to invest more taxpayers' dollars into the project particularly after the New England Patriots decided to remain in MA. It is even possible the ACC had informal conversations with UConn regarding the possibility of UConn expanding its stadium by a certain date as a condition for ACC membership. From the articles I have seen, it appears the State of CT has no desire to invest more taxpayers' money to expand the capacity of the stadium just for UConn football. Now if the stadium is going to be used by a NFL team or possibly host a World Cup match, then the State of CT would at least entertain expansion discussions. Unfortunately, IIWII for UConn when it made the decision to demolish the on campus stadium so a multi-million dollar basketball practice facility could be built in its location and allow the State of CT to build the new stadium.
