I grew up in all 3 parts of the East coast

In my early 50’s lived first 10 years of my life in Falls Church and Vienna then spent 3 years in Albany NY area then at age 14 moved to Orlando area. In the late 70’s in Virginia as a kid I remember really enjoying USC when they came on. They had those great running backs. My memory is foggy beyond that. In Upstate New York the only college football people cared about were Penn State and Notre Dame. By the time I got to Orlando in 84 I saw how many people really like the Gators and the Hurricanes and then the Seminoles burst on the scene in the late 80’s. So yes college football is a very regional thing with the exception of Notre Dame, Army, and Navy.
