FWIW the origins of North American gridiron football can be traced to the University of Toronto with the first documented game played at University College in 1861. The University of Toronto played its first intercollegiate football game in 1877 against the University of Michigan. It appears the school plays both versions of football (American and Canadian). With a total enrollment of 100K (80K undergraduate and 20K graduate) and membership in the AAU, it would seem the Varsity Blues may be the perfect access to an untapped market. It is also worth mentioning that NCAA DII has 1 Canadian school (Simon Fraser) and the NAIA has 1 or 2 schools (University of British Columbia or University of Vancouver...I forget which), so adding the Varsity Blues at the DI level may not be that foreign of a concept. ** Edited by VTHokie2000 at 5/28/2026, 9:58:15 AM
