The ACC's lack of large state universities with...

large, rabid fan bases (football being the most important) has been it's weakness from the very beginning. Adding Penn State in the late 80's would've been a good start. WVU would've been another good addition 10-20 years ago. Keeping South Carolina would've been nice too. Maybe getting Kentucky to bring its basketball to the ACC before the SEC became powerful. FSU and Tech were the only additions that would've met the SEC/B1G formula for success. Miami was a good addition at the time since they were still a national football power. The ACC possibly could've had Penn State, Maryland, UVA, Tech, WVU, Kentucky, UNC, NC State, Duke, Wake, Clemson, South Carolina, GA Tech, FSU and Miami. I'd prefer Syracuse (New York market) over Pitt to get to 16.
