There are only so many time slots to watch college football games.

To your point, if you think about it, even the most avid college football junkie can only watch 5 live games a week during the regular season based on current time slots. These time slots are Thursday night, Saturday: noon, 3:30, 7:30, 10:30. I will leave Wednesday and Friday out of this. So, in a way, if you are competing with other conferences for viewership and want to reduce your own number of payouts, 5 games (10 teams) weekly is the key number. Anything after that, you are basically competing with yourself. Now competing with yourself might not be a bad situation. Because there are plenty of fans who just follow their own team, and don't watch a ton of other games. If teams of rooting interests such as these have a large following, it can still pay off. Also, if you have two games to offer in the same time slot, the alternative game might have more of a national interest due to the week's standings and rankings. That being said, conferences are probably already too large now. But I'm not sure how the trend can be reversed. And what is important in conference realignment in 2023, might not be important in 2025. There's a lot of moving parts and the parts are quite fluid.
