It's really not worse than anything else if people want to keep the
conference together. Now that Texas and OU are in the SEC and USC and UCLA are in the B10, then almost ANYONE that gets added to those conferences is dilutive on a pro-rata payout. Perhaps FSU and Clemson and maybe UNC are the exceptions. So we would have to get less than pro-rata or have a share phase-in to join. Basically we would have to "join on the cheap." So this is some pretty crafty thinking by the ACC leadership to employ that reasoning and let Stanford, Cal and maybe SMU graft themselves into the conference on the same "haircut" model. Stanford and Cal have so many whale alums that eating part of the payout is paltry beer money. These guys are probably cooking up an internet broadcast package.
My take is that we bricked the SEC option back in 2011, but it is pretty clear that the VT administrators don't really want the SEC and it is quite likely we will get slapped around. I am the loudest complainer about the small private school flavor of the ACC, but that is the culture, so why not buy in on it. All these conferences are going to be so *****d up and spread around that at least the ACC would have a coherent theme with these additions.
Feel free to throw stones, but I sort of like this. Cal and Stanford are both amazing places to watch games.
