A part of it...
He mentioned that the lawyer group that UNC had/is using to help with conference realignment has a program established with UVA's school of law. I am assuming this would help skew UNC's realignment views to include UVA.
The real key is how much clout the SEC and Big Ten give UNC in them wanting to add to their conference. It also matters if UNC would be able to go somewhere with or without NC St. I just don't see the Big Ten saying, "Sure, we will take 3 okay football teams within the same region" unless they pair them with ND if ND sees the ACC will be a shell of its former self. One other option possibly would be the SEC saying why not, and take UNC, NC St, UVA, and VT to grow and appease any government issues (plus ensuring some rival games in these parts).
Once again, I think the Big Ten and SEC are at a crossroads, but this time they have a few years to figure things out - especially if the House settlement ever happens and they decide on a play-off format. I think the Big Ten and the SEC would like to separate from everyone else, but they realize they will alienate quite a number of college football fans. I think both are seeing how many schools they would have to add to accomplish this as well as spreading out across the nation. I think if the P2 could get the ACC to crumble by taking teams, I could see 48 being the final number (24 each).
For those ACC teams that could be plucked by the P2, the decision would be made if they thing sacrificing to get in the P2 would be worth it, or would they prefer to be at the top of another conference, but still not be that far behind. Does a school like Clemson join the P2, but look like Oklahoma did this past season like an average SEC team (like they said, some of these high powered schools are going to have to lose).
Would schools like FSU and Clemson work behind the scenes to get the schools they want in the ACC along with some of the Big 12 to form a new conference to make the P2 into P2.5 - I think they would have to go national and not regional - some for TV ratings, and some to sway ND to join. They could get 16-24 teams - perhaps something like:
VT, ND, FSU, Clemson, Utah, Ariz St, Kansas, UNC, GT, Tex Tech, Ok St, UVA, NC St, Duke, Lville, WVU, Pitt, Miami, Stanford, BYU, Colorado, Cal, Houston, & TCU
That is 24 ( you could cherry-pick from those or swap in and out. If ND would one day decide to join a conference if this is something they would join - they could see themselves as potential front-runners of this conference to have easy access to the play-offs, or it would give them enough of a national schedule in-conference to appease that aspect. Could each of these schools gain money in this conference than where they are at? Maybe the SEC and Big Ten get up to 20 each with adding a few of these schools, but leave enough decent/good programs to leave this new conference with 20 as well.
I just don't know if the P2 goes to 48 teams if VT is included. Maybe they are a tag-along - or maybe UVA is able to get into one, and the other P2 wants access to Virginia with getting VT. Does the SEC still to regionality with getting to 24 (the one path I see VT getting into the SEC), or do they branch out with getting Kansas and an Arizona school - or even Utah/Colorado. Does the Big Ten only add a Stanford, Utah, UNC and their tag-along(s), and ND? Does VT even have a voice talking to either P2 to see their options.
If the P2 go to 48 teams, I would hope they would develop 6-team pods to keep some regionality/rivalries in tact (as well as include VT). Going to 48 teams would still alienate some fans, but not nearly as much is they would stop at 40. It would still keep some interest if the P2 only go to 40 teams and a combo of 20 teams from the ACC, Big 12, Pac-2, and Notre Dame. I am not sure with the play-off, but I would just push to 16 teams w/ the 1st two rounds at home sites (not sure of model - 5-5-3-1 + 2 wilds cards - but only if a minimum of 10 conference games is forced).
