I think were are and have been wide open, maybe not so much

With your stand alone, which I think is very misplaced. But VT is just like a lot of schools, schools destined to be left behind when evaluated on their own. Lets face reality, this was is and will be about separating most of what was the Big12, PAC and ACC along with the G5 from most of the TV money we have been receiving and reallocating it to their P2 national brands. They already have just about all the football they need and only ND is coveted for football. To finish out whatever number media wants, it will take something other than football. Otherwise UVA would not be in any discussion. Heck, even GT has been discussed so football simply cannot be the driver finishing this up as it was starting this. So the real question is what is valuable to either or both of the P2? Fortunately we do have a couple of things many schools do not with the overwhelming biggie being how much of a player we are in the DC/NOVA/VA/NC market area. That is the real driver with UVA. Get them and you get a presence. And when compared to us, they value AAU so going UVA throws a bone to the academic side of the Big. They probably incorrectly think whether they get UVA or us doesn't really matter in gaining marker share. That is where they are wrong but I am not sure they know it yet. If both the Big and SEC choses not to plant a flag in the above market area, we are toast. If only one does we are probably toast because the one national brand and biggest owner of the NC market is UNC and they have never wanted to be associated with us. Our best shot is if the Big goes all in challenging the SEC along the atlantic coast and the SEC answers. Under that, I think both will make a hard run at our market area and how they do that establishes what our best opportunity may be. But this is no way a playing field any remaining school except ND/UNC can pull themselves up by their bootstraps
