VT scored first, went down 3-1, came back 4-3, on and on to a 10-10 tie with about 7 minutes left. I just got back home to PA from Europe and drove down yesterday and thought I would bring good karma to the team. I just felt it would happen. Alas, depth of the team came to light. We need more depth, not sure why Tech can't bring in that extra scorer we have better fans than the 'hoos, just not Lax history to attract that extra player or two. GO HOKIES!!!

It was an entertaining game that, in my opinion, took a wrong turn for the Hokies at the end of the third quarter. Better teams simply would not make the mistake of an unforced turnover and loss of possession in that situation - especially when UVA was controlling the draw, possession, and outshooting VT. The Hokies already had a thin margin for error going into that game. I agree the Hokies need more depth. More specifically they need the athletes to compete in the ACC - size, speed, and what I call a strong game IQ. They need players with the “it” factor - sometimes your best practice players are not your best game time players. Those who play best when the lights are on and are pure playmakers are who I want on the field. The Hokies have statistically been one of the worst offensive teams in the ACC over the past several years. They have lacked pure goal scorers who know how to finish. They have lacked offensive creativity that would allow them to take advantage of players who are true goal scorers. Why would an elite offensive player want to play at VT given recent history. To create the depth and attract the types of players with the offensive firepower VT needs, they need to recruit better. VT offers a lot - great school, campus, academics, top wlax conference, and is close enough to lacrosse hotbeds in PA, NY, NJ, MD and VA to get elite players. What may work against the Hokies are its facilities, coaching, and the seemingly lack of support for the program to compete in the ACC. I hope with the coming changes at VT the wlax program gets more attention and resources to be competitive. I do think a coaching change is needed at this point to infuse new life into the program. While her record at Army was average, I liked the Skiera hire at the time. It just hasn’t worked out the way we all hoped. I thought it could go either two ways, either you could step foot and be defeated and kind of wallow in your own sorrow, or you could use that as an opportunity to play free and with nothing to lose.” By RPI, they’re out. My initial methodology was that if they made the ACCT and played UNC close, they could play onto the bubble. She mentioned Galica (5G) had quick hands and that the ball was nearly impossible to get from her stick. Thought the team played one of its best offensive game of the season, made a lot of plays to “compensate for the draw”.

an eternity. "quick hands". That's an underwhelming excuse. No NCAAT. Time to go watch my rugby club make a run for a natty.

It’s tough to win when you get doubled up on draw controls which translated into 14 more shots for your opponent. One play bothered me at the end of the third quarter. VT had possession and looked to be running out the clock and avoid the draw to start the fourth quarter. They held the ball for about 40 seconds and for some unknown reason tried to force a pass in the eight with 9 seconds left. The Hokies turned it over and as a result lost possession to start the last quarter. The lack of situational awareness in that moment is maddening. Mistakes will happen, but some are avoidable. This was one of those times. It felt like the momentum shifted to UVA with that turnover. The players need to execute better but I am not letting the coaching staff off the hook. They need to know the situation and instruct the players to hold the ball and let the clock run out. I said before I thought a loss to UVA warranted a coaching change. ...on the VTAD vine. There are subtle and not subtles voices on TSL calling for VT Lacrosse to be cut. l have no idea how much the grumblings carry in Merryman.

At current funding levels for the Olympic sports, the "under performing" being cut would not move the $$ needle enough.

Neither is Clemson, but they seem to have thrown a lot more money at it.

I knew dozens of families in Maryland who had one or more of their children play D-1 men's or women's lacrosse and none of them were the country club type people that is readily stereotyped on this board. Sure there are a few players who come from wealthy families but the vast majority have parents who are carpenters, landscapers, nurses, government workers, teachers, retailers, wholesalers, ... They are hardworking people who provide an upper middleclass lifestyle for their children. They come from the same economic class as Tech's soccer, volleyball, baseball and softball players. Lacrosse is pretty much a suburban sport and I guess some people consider folks in the suburbs to be "country club" people. Tech can be successful in lacrosse if they want to but our athletic department doesn't fund it like most ACC schools do. Clemson is about the least likely ACC school to sponsor D-1 women's lacrosse and yet they have made a serious commitment to running a successful women's lacrosse program. Tech's lacrosse facilities are upper half G-5 at best. JMU and Liberty have better facilities than Tech. I don't expect any improvement in our women's lacrosse program until Tech makes a commitment to compete in the ACC. I don't expect any miracle any time soon. Tech seems to be satisfied with the program's annual lower third conference standings and slightly above .500 overall records.

and the private schools. Parents view lacrosse as the most efficient way to get an athletic admission slot into the Ivies, NESCAC, and Patriot League schools. Those same parents view UVA, Duke, ND, and UNC as more academically desirable than VT.

is a very popular sport, and VT tends to be one of the most popular schools in that area. Money is probably a part of the issue, but not all of it.
