it is one of the five mandatory sports that have to be included in the scoring (up to 19 sports are included). The mandatory five are women's volleyball, baseball, both basketballs, and women's soccer. Then the next best 14 after those five make up the official scoring. So, you are on the right path with your thinking.

and the lousy ones don't count (as long as they aren't the 5 mandatory counters?). It seems like that gives a massive advantage to schools with tons of minor sports, like Stanford.

have to count in the ranking. Most every school that has football pretty much had to have volleyball (since it used to be a headcount sport) to help offset the scholarship disparity. Not all schools have baseball and not all have women's soccer. But if a school has those, they have to count. Hope that makes sense.
