VT needs to close the program and move the scholarships to another...
...women's sport.

Better option…..
Drop Volleyball and pick up Women’s Wrestling

Doesn't volleyball get weighted more heavily than other women's sports
in the Director's Cup rankings? Or am I incorrect?

You are semi-correct :-). Volleyball doesn't count anymore per se BUT
it is one of the five mandatory sports that have to be included in the scoring (up to 19 sports are included). The mandatory five are women's volleyball, baseball, both basketballs, and women's soccer. Then the next best 14 after those five make up the official scoring. So, you are on the right path with your thinking. ** Edited by VTScoop at 12/19/2025, 3:37:54 PM

So a school can have 19 good teams and 10 lousy ones
and the lousy ones don't count (as long as they aren't the 5 mandatory counters?). It seems like that gives a massive advantage to schools with tons of minor sports, like Stanford.

To be counted, each of those 5 programs must be in place?

No, you don't have to have those sports, but if you do, those sports
have to count in the ranking. Most every school that has football pretty much had to have volleyball (since it used to be a headcount sport) to help offset the scholarship disparity. Not all schools have baseball and not all have women's soccer. But if a school has those, they have to count. Hope that makes sense.

Or maybe get rid of M & W golf; put that money into volleyball.

M&W golf have been FAR more competitive than volleyball has been

Probably so. Personal choice, since I'm not a golfer; would rather grow vb.

Golf probably has more donor capacity than volleyball
Plus we currently have a few pro golf alumni (Cone and Vincent) and one broadcasting (Wagner).
