Conference schedule is supposed to be 10 games right? The Clemson game would be 11 wouldn’t it? Might’ve just been…”hey, we’ve got open dates, let’s play”.

It was exactly as you described. Both teams were having trouble finding a suitable opponent, so they just decided to play a non-conference game.
