LT Gen Simon Boliver Buckner, Jr., who was once a VMI student, was killed on Okinawa by Japanese artillery fire while visiting a forward outpost. He was the son of Confederate General Simon B. Buckner, Sr.

...of the Great Courses series: World War II: The Pacific Theater. They mentioned the loss of LT Gen Buckner in that episode. He was the highest ranked general killed in combat during WW II.
