When my dad was in high school, he got drunk and built a bomb. He put
the bomb on a highway overpass. It exploded but did no damage. Witnesses got his license plate when he drove away. The next day the FBI came to the house. He just got scared by them, no real trouble. My grandfather just laughed at him getting scared....

My dad (ChemE VT in the late 50s) had a backyard lab
...one of those toolshed-sized farm buildings you'd see behind a farmhouse. All sorts of beakers and flasks and such. Pretty elaborate.. While in HS, he concocted nitro glycerin from stuff he'd ordered from a catalogue. LOL. My grandad wasn't amused

The real reason was it didn't include a centrifuge
