American individuals had competed before that, but 7-11 was the first American-sponsored team. Team members included Alex Stieda, Davis Phinney, Eric Heiden, Bob Roll, Ron Kiefel, Chris Carmichael, Doug Shapiro, Jeff Pierce, and Alexi Grewal. That same year, Greg LeMond, riding for a French team, La Vie Claire, became the first American to win the TDF. The 7-11 team never won the general classification of the TDF, but they did win a number of stage races.

a decade later, first being organized in 1996 and first competing in the TDF in 1997.
