backdoor Roth*

Regular IRA accounts have income limits if you want to contribute pre-tax. But you're still allowed to contribute after-tax dollars to an IRA. Meanwhile the Roth IRA has hard income limits for contributions (always after-tax), but there are no restrictions on rolling funds from a regular IRA into a Roth IRA. You can literally deposit $5000 (after-tax) in an IRA, and the next day you can transfer it into a Roth IRA*. The money then grows tax-free, and distributions from a Roth IRA are tax free. * assumes you don't have a large balance of pre-tax contributions already in your IRA. If you have an existing balance of pre-tax contributions in your IRA, your transfer to the Roth IRA will be proportional to your total balance, and you'll owe taxes on the component that is drawn from your pre-tax contributions/growth. example: 25,000 IRA balance. 20,000 (80%) is pre-tax contributions/growth from when your income was low enough to qualify for that. and 5,000 is the after-tax contribution you just made. (20%). a $5,000 transfer to a Roth IRA would be $1,000 after-tax (20%) and $4,000 (80%) pre-tax. You would owe ordinary income tax on the $4,000.
