Lounge Advice: Anyone done the career switcheroo, you retire, spouse works?

In other words, you work for 35+ years, retire and your (younger, usually) spouse, who has not worked for a long while, goes to work to get benefits and a little income? If so, how did it go? Note: I realize this may be too specific for actual sound advice, and welcome the usual Lounge wisdom. TIA
