From the Roanoke Times: An off-duty officer's unattended firearm was discovered in a Hidden Valley Middle School bathroom during a basketball game Wednesday evening, Roanoke County Police reported. The firearm was found in a restroom during a basketball game against William Byrd Middle School, according to a police department news release. An adult discovered it and notified school staff, according to the release. School staff "quickly locked the restroom to secure the firearm, secured the building and contacted the Roanoke County Police Department," according to the release. "Within minutes," the release continued, police found that the firearm was department-issued and belonged to an off-duty officer "who was attending the game and left the firearm unattended after leaving the restroom." The off-duty officer quickly recovered the gun, police said, adding that the department "is reviewing the circumstances around this matter."
