Another thing that’s gotten out of control: tipping culture in the US

Also file this under “As if You Needed Another Reason to Hate Miami”: This thing with the credit card machine prompting you for a tip (10, 15, 20%, etc) for simple counter service has gotten ridiculous. I recently had a flight connecting in MIA and decided ( bad move) to buy ceviche at a counter in the airport. Guy literally took 3 seconds to scoop pre-made ceviche into a bowl and hand it to me. I pay with credit card, but if I tip, it’s cash. When I hit “no tip” on the card reader, guy starts cursing me under his breath in Spanish. Like, fairly nasty stuff. Two years living in Honduras a few years back left me with a pretty damn good understanding of Spanish insults and curse words. No tip for that guy. Geez. Can’t stand Miami. Everything about it is effing annoying. The Canes and their ilk are the absolute perfect representatives of the entire abrasive, brain dead, irratating “culture” in that city. And the ultra obnoxious MIA airport is also a great representation of the city, crushed with endless lines in customs, violent drunk tourists, and surly wait staff. I try like hell to avoid it but sometimes that’s not possible when I’m traveling for work. And no, I wasn’t wearing any Hokies gear. So it wasn’t that.
