What some subtle ways to let employer know you are keeping job options open

I'm not that enthused about trying to leverage an actual job offer against employer as by that time, I'm invested in leaving and the risk that the employer will lose respect and eventually push you out anyways even if you get what you want is high. I am thinking about making some requests that drop hints so employer gets message that it's nut cutting time.
