Stranger Things is a unicorn. A science fiction series where things
actually happen.
There are so many science fiction series where nothing happens. I first noticed this with John From Cincinnati. The previews made the series look extremely enticing. All sorts of unexplainable events start happening to a SoCal surf family (like levitating off the ground) at the same a mysterious stranger shows up. The show was cancelled after one season because over the course of 10 shows, nothing else happened.
The trend has only accelerated. Apple released Invasion, a show about aliens taking over the planet. But none of the show focused on the aliens. The focus was on day-to-day problems people were having during the alien invasion. Two or three episodes focused on some kids stuck in a giant hole. The big reveal of the fourth episode was (spoiler alert) the kids climbing out of the hole.
And now there’s Night Sky, a show about an older couple who somehow have a portal to another dimension. Never learning my lesson, I tuned in for the first episode. Majority of the show was about the wife’s doctor appointment while the husband went to the grocery store and a diner. I will not be watching the second episode.
The writers have a premise, but not nearly enough substance for a series, so it’s all filler. No thanks.
