ding, ding, ding, correct!
The Japanese launched 9300 Fu-Go incendiary balloon bombs. The intent was for them to ride the jet stream across the Pacific to start forest fires. Of the 9300 launched, only about 300 reached North America. They did pose a bit of a threat, and the war department decided to keep their arrivals out of the news to keep the info about their arrivals out of Japanese hands. The ill-fated civilians encountered one of these bombs in the forest in Oregon.
